Alright, fam, let's talk about it! Politics is a mess, AI is rampant, people are losing jobs left & right, and making cryptocurrency is making millionaires overnight; and life is life-ing and dancing all around you…and you’re just feeling overwhelmed.
Learn the newest 2 step: Pivot. Don’t Panic.™️
Not the fancy footwork you see on "Dancing With The Stars," but the real-deal, life-saving, career-boosting kind. You know, the kind that separates the ballers from the benchwarmers. I’m your gal, a former athlete turned entertainment & sports attorney who’s traded sweatbands for spreadsheets as an entrepreneur, but still understands how to play the game of life. And let’s be real, sometimes life throws you a full-court press and hits you with the unexpected, when you’re just trying to run up the score. That’s when you gotta learn to: Pivot. Don’t Panic.™️
Look, we've all been there. You’re crushing it, your business is booming, your personal life is picture-perfect... then BAM! Burnout or depression hits like a Shaq dunk, the industry shifts like a Steph Curry three-pointer, or life throws a curveball that would make a baseball pitcher blush. It’s easy to freeze, to panic, to think your game is over. But that’s when you gotta remember the golden rule: in basketball, just like in life, it's not about avoiding the defense, it's about how you respond to it.
Think of your life as a basketball game. You've got your offense (your goals, your hustle) and your defense (the obstacles, the curveballs). Sometimes, you gotta switch up your play. Sometimes, you gotta pivot.
Here’s my three-step process to pivoting like a pro:
1. Don’t Panic. Create a Plan, Make a Play. Read the Defense: The Awareness Play.
Just like in a basketball game, you gotta scan the court. Are you running into a double team (burnout)? Is your opponent switching up their zone defense (industry changes)? Is life throwing you a buzzer-beater (life emergency, economic recessions, job loss)? You gotta be aware. I often use these times of confusion to reevaluate my goals for myself and clients by using my custom goal sheet to help plan & reevaluate personal, business & creative goals.
•Personal Life: Are you feeling drained? Are your relationships suffering? Are you constantly hitting snooze? That’s your body telling you something. Listen up! It's like your body is calling a time out.
• Business Life: Is your market shifting? Are there new technologies you need to educate yourself on?Are your numbers dropping? Are your competitors innovating faster than you can say “NFT?” Time to analyze the data, scout the competition, and figure out their strategy and what will work for you in your next season ahead. Don't be afraid to pull up the analytics, just like a coach reviewing game film. Success is often in the work we are avoiding. (Here I am sitting on the floor on an NBA area manifesting and planning what has grown to be an annual NBA event. when they say dream, big dream bigger!)
2. Plan the Pivot: The Strategic Shift. Offensive Plays to Take Action
Once you've read the defense, done your research and made a plan it's time to take action and make your move. This is where the pivot comes in. It's not about completely abandoning your game plan, it's about making a strategic adjustment. And sometimes the pivot can look like seclusion, isolation and just plan ole taking a break! Think of it as a crossover dribble, switching directions to create space.
• Personal Life: Maybe you need to scale back your workload, prioritize self-care, or seek professional help. It’s not about giving up, it’s about recharging your batteries. Maybe you need to switch from a full court press, to a half court set.
• Business Life: Maybe you need to diversify your revenue streams, target a new market, or invest in new technology. Or stop all completely and reevaluate your purpose. It’s about staying agile and adaptable. Don't be afraid to try a new play, or a new formation.
3. Slam Dunk: Take action & Execute.
Knowing what to do is one thing, knowing when to actually do it is another. This is where the execution of timing your pivot comes in. I often say, in my business, measure twice cut ✂️ once. But also, don’t plan so much you procrastinate and get nothing done. It's about committing to your pivot, staying focused, and putting in the work and trying even if things don’t go right the first time. Even though Michael Jordan was a skilled shooter, sometimes a slam dunk was a more guaranteed shoot when on a transition after a steal. Think of it as a slam dunk, a decisive move that seals the deal.
• Personal Life: Stick to your new plan & self-care routine, communicate openly with your loved ones, and stay committed to your goals. Remember, consistency is key. Just like practicing free throws, you'll get better with time.
• Business Life: Implement your new strategies, monitor your progress, and be willing to adjust as needed. Don't be afraid to hustle, to grind, to put in the extra hours. Like any good athlete, you need to put in the reps.
Look, life's a game, and sometimes you gotta change your playbook. Pivot. Don’t panic. Embrace life’s challenge, learn from your mistakes, and keep your eye on the prize. Remember, it’s all about a winning mindset. Even the best players miss shots and lose every now and then, but it's how you bounce back that defines you. Now go out there and make your winning shot, even if you have to pivot, take a break and change sports! You got this!
