What is Juneteenth and why do we need to celebrate it?

2020 has been challenging but we are surviving! As we go thru crisis after crisis I decided to claim victory over 2020 and wanted to celebrate my heritage and the legacy of things to come with the launch of PrettySMART’s first clothing and lifestyle project called, The Legacy Collection. While I was lucky to get exposed to much other American and African-American History through my life from my parents, grandparents,  friends and independent study and research and just wanting to learn more about my true culture; I grew up going to many Juneteenth  celebrations in my hometown of St. Petersburg, FL. So what exactly is Juneteenth and why should we celebrate it? Juneteenth often known as Freedom Day or Independence Day, is derived from  June 19, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation— which had been issued on January 1, 1863— was read to enslaved African-Americans in Texas by Gordon Granger. Texas was the last Confederate State to have the proclamation announced, after the end of the American Civil War in April of that year. Texas was the furthest slave state and the last to get the news. We recognize the history and legacy of Black Americans during that time and the social injustices we continue to face still in 2020, by commemorating   JuneTeenth and all Black Lives and our heritage thru the Legacy Collection. Use code LEGACY to save off any purchase over $20 until June 19, 2020.

Peace + Love,

Shannon
